Choosing the right home security camera system is a crucial decision for your peace of mind. When you pick a security camera, you also commit to a brand’s specific security ecosystem. After all, picking the right camera goes beyond just features.
Both Wyze and Arlo are well-known American security companies specializing in home security cameras. However, while one focuses on budget security cameras, the other offers a comprehensive, budget-friendly securitysystem. Let’s explore which is which in our Wyze vs. Arlo security camera comparison.
Wyze vs. Arlo: What’s the difference?
Arlo is an American company specializing in wireless indoor and outdoor cameras, video doorbells, floodlight cameras, and home security systems. Wyze is also an American company offering security devices along with a range of smart home devices such as vacuums, light bulbs, and routers.
Both companies offer DIY home security camera systems, though with different approaches. Arlo serves as a one-stop brand for both devices and services, including 24/7 Professional Monitoring. Wyze, on the other hand, offers a more limited security lineup mainly focused on wired security cameras. More recently, Wyze has also started offering the Wyze Home Monitoring System.
1. Do Arlo and Wyze security systems offer smart home integration?
Yes, both companies offer smart home integration. Arlo security devices are compatible with Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, If This Then That (IFTTT), and Samsung SmartThings without a subscription. Wyze cameras offer Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT support.
2. Do Arlo and Wyze offer paid subscription plans?
Yes, both Arlo and Wyze offer optional paid subscriptions. You can enhance your smart security devices with additional features by opting into their monthly plans.
Arlo provides the Arlo Secure subscription plans, which include features such as 30-Day Cloud Video storage, Smart Object Detection, One Tap Emergency Response, and Professional Monitoring. These plans range from $6.67 to $20.83 per month, and every Arlo security device comes with a 1-month trial.
Wyze, on the other hand, offers the more limited Cam Plus and Cam Unlimited plans, priced at $2.99 and $9.99 per month, respectively. These plans include features like 14-day cloud storage for video events, as well as motion and sound alerts. Wyze has announced a new plan with Professional Monitoring. However, it wasn’t available at the time of this review.
3. What are the storage options for Wyze vs. Arlo security cameras?
Both Arlo and Wyze offer cloud storage and local storage options. With the mentioned Arlo Secure subscription, Arlo provides 30-Day Cloud Storage for video event recordings. Prices start at $6.67 per month for a single camera or $10.83 per month for unlimited cameras. The security footage is stored in its original resolution, up to 4K.
Regarding local storage, most Arlo security cameras can save footage on a microSD card or USB flash drive when connected to an optional Arlo SmartHub. As an alternative, the Arlo Go 2 LTE/Wi-Fi Camera has a built-in microSD slot.
Wyze, on the other hand, offers cloud storage plans at $2.99 for one camera and $9.99 for unlimited cameras. Their cameras and video doorbells have an SD card slot for on-device storage. While this has some benefits, it also has downsides. For example, if you don’t opt for cloud storage and the camera is lost, the security footage is lost too.

Budget security camera: Arlo 2nd Gen Essential Wireless Camera vs. Wyze Cam v4.
Let’s start with the Wyze Cam v4. Priced at $35.98, this budget security camera offers 2.5K QHD video, color night vision, integrated spotlights and a siren, a MicroSD slot, 2-Way Audio, a 115.9° Field of View, and 8x digital zoom. While it’s packed with features, there is one significant drawback: the Wyze Cam v4 is a wired camera. This considerably limits your installation options and reduces flexibility. The camera is also waterproof. However, you’ll need to purchase an additional outdoor power adapter for outdoor use.
Arlo, on the other hand, offers the Arlo 2nd Gen Essential Security Camera. The HD model is priced at $49.99, while the 2K version costs $99.99. This security camera features 1080p or 2K video, Color Night Vision, an Integrated Spotlight and Siren, 2-Way Audio, a wider 160° Field of View, weatherproofing, and a rechargeable battery. The main difference compared to the Wyze Cam v4 is that the Arlo Essential is a wireless camera. You can install it anywhere without needing a USB port or power outlet.
While the Wyze Cam is cheaper and provides higher video resolution, it sacrifices flexibility because it requires a wired power source. In contrast, the Arlo Essential offers the convenience of a rechargeable battery and a wider Field of View, which is particularly important for securing your home. You can place it anywhere, without the need for a nearby power outlet.
It’s also worth noting that Wyze offers only two camera options. In contrast, Arlo provides a wide variety of security cameras to suit different needs and budgets. You can find high-end models like the HDR Arlo Pro 5S 2K Camera, the 4K HDR Arlo Ultra 2 Security Camera, and the 4G LTE-enabled Arlo Go 2 Camera. There’s even the Arlo 2nd Gen Essential XL Security Camera, which features extended battery life. Whatever your requirements, there’s an Arlo camera to meet them.
Alarm system: Arlo Home Security System vs. Wyze Home Monitoring System.
The Wyze Home Monitoring System is a budget-friendly modular alarm system. The Core Starter Kit includes a Sense Hub, two entry sensors, one motion sensor, and a keypad. You can also add additional sensors individually, with options like climate sensors and leak sensors.
In contrast, Arlo offers the comprehensive Arlo Home Security System. The entry kit includes two sensors and a keypad that also functions as a sensor hub. Additional sensors can be purchased separately. The main difference between the Wyze and Arlo systems is that Wyze sensors monitor one specific threat, while Arlo’s All-in-One Sensors can detect up to eight.
This means that with Wyze, you’ll need several sensors to monitor different security threats. This can drive up the total cost of customizing the system to meet your specific security needs. In contrast, Arlo’s system is more flexible, needing fewer sensors to protect your home from various threats.
Arlo vs. Wyze: What’s the verdict?
Both Arlo and Wyze offer excellent, cost-effective home security options. Wyze provides budget-friendly, feature-packed cameras but lacks variety and flexibility. Arlo offers a broader range of cameras, including wireless ones for easier installation. Make sure to choose the security camera that best suits your needs. Protect your home and enjoy peace of mind for years to come.
