You’ve just unboxed your new Arlo Video Doorbell, and you’re not sure where to start? No problem. Take a look at your quick start guide, set up your supplies, and let’s walk through the installation process together.
There are two key options that can help you see more at your front door: wired or wireless video doorbells. Both require a high-speed internet connection. A wire-free, battery operated video doorbell like the Essential Wireless Video Doorbell gives you full coverage for any doorway. You can easily set up your wire-free system in minutes and connect the doorbell to your Wi-Fi network.
A wireless doorbell is specifically designed for flexible installation and to capture the blind spots that other video doorbells miss. The 1:1 aspect ratio lets you see a package on the ground and a visitor from head to toe.
While wireless doorbells always operate on battery power, you can also hardwire it. Simply connect it to your existing doorbell chime to continuously charge the battery.
A wired video doorbell, on the other hand, requires a bit more hands-on installation. Wired doorbells like the Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell integrate seamlessly with existing electrical wiring, with a voltage between 16V AC and 24V AAC and a 10VA transformer.
Whether you go for a wired or wireless option, let’s walk through how to install your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell today.
How to install the Arlo Video Doorbell with wiring
Let’s start with the wired option. Wired video doorbells like the Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell are optimized for your front or back door.
Wiring is required, but don’t let the instructions overwhelm you. It’s actually incredibly easy to connect. Simply replace your existing wired doorbell to keep a watchful eye on your doorstep.
1. Bring the right tools.
To start, you may need a few basic tools. Grab a Phillips head screwdriver, a ladder to reach your chime box, and tape to secure wires to the wall. Keep in mind: you may need to drill new holes for the doorbell. Be sure to bring a 6mm size drill bit and power drill if you’re installing with anchors.
2. Download the Arlo App.
If you’re already an Arlo user, simply log into your app. New to the Arlo Family? Welcome! Download the Arlo Secure App from the Apple App Store or the Google Play App Store.
On your mobile device, open the app. Under the “Select your Arlo Device” menu, tap “Doorbells & Chime.” Then, select the “Arlo Video Doorbell” option.
3. Then, find your chime box.
Before you go any further, find your existing chime box. A doorbell chime is a button that your visitors press to trigger a chime sound inside your home from the box itself. Take a look at the app to find out what your chime box looks like. They’re usually mounted by your front door or in an existing hallway.
4. Don’t forget to turn off the power.
Before you dive into the technical steps, always turn off the power at the breaker or fuse box. Ring your doorbell to test that the power is completely off before moving forward.
5. Place the power kit.
Install the included power kit to your doorbell’s existing chime. A power kit makes sure that enough power is sent to your Arlo Doorbell to work well. Use the adhesive provided to attach your power kit, and be sure to avoid areas with wires that could interfere with the chime’s operation.
If space is tight, feel free to place the power kit on the side of the chime box. Just make sure the switch is positioned outwards. Replace the chime cover once complete.
6. Secure your mounting plate to the wall.
Then, disconnect the wires for your existing doorbell. Be careful that wires don’t fall inside the wall. Try taping them with electrical tape so keep the wires in place.
Now you’re ready to remove the existing doorbell from the wall. Screw in the mounting wedge with the provided screws you’ll find in your Arlo box. While the flat mounting plate could fit well, you may want to use an angled mounting plate for better fit. (Don’t worry, we provide both.)
Then, position the mounting plate on the wall. If your existing wired doorbell holes were in a different spot, you may need to drill new holes before installing.
7. Install your doorbell.
Once the mounting plate is all set, connect the doorbell wires from the wall to the back of your Arlo Video Doorbell. You can connect each Arlo Essential Video Doorbell wires to either terminal. Then, drop the wires behind the screws and tighten. Snap the doorbell to the mounting plate with an “up and in” motion.
Pro tip: make sure the wires come through the hole in the middle of the mounting plate.
8. Turn the power back on.
Great news! You’re ready to go. Turn the power back on your breaker, and follow the prompts on your Arlo Secure App to complete the setup.
How to install the Arlo Wireless Doorbell
Now that we’ve walked through how to set up a wired doorbell, the wireless set-up is incredibly simple. The Arlo Essential Wireless Video Doorbell links directly to Wi-Fi with no hub required. With instant Wi-Fi connection, installation of your smart doorbell is quick and wire-free.
You can install without wires using the rechargeable battery. If you bought a chime box, follow Steps 3-6 noted above before activating your doorbell in the app.
If you’d prefer to avoid recharging periodically, you can also connect your Arlo Essential Wireless Doorbell to existing wiring for continuous power. Simply follow the same instructions for the wired option.
When set up correctly, a wireless and wire-free doorbell can protect everyone who matters most. If you have any additional questions, the Arlo Support team is here to help.
